Wrestling: Germantown Academy Finishes Fifth, Qualifies Six Student-Athletes for National Preps

FORT WASHINGTON -- Germantown Academy only brought eight wrestlers to the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Wrestling Tournament from Feb. 16-17, but even though they were small in numbers, the Patriots' performances were mighty. With seven top-eight finishes, the GA compiled 117.5 points, good enough for fifth place. The team also had six wrestlers finish in the top six of their weight class, automatically qualifying for National Preps.

Justin Farnsworth '27 - 107

Farnsworth finished second at 107 pounds and qualified for National Preps after going 3-1 on the weekend. After receiving a bye in Round 1, the freshman won by tech fall, 17-1, over Liam McKlveen (Kiski School). He followed that up with a win by decision over Brendan Kelly (Malvern Prep), 4-1. Farnsworth lost by decision to Shamus Regan (Wyoming Seminary), 3-0, in the 1st Place Match.

Jack Baron '26 - 113

Baron took third at 113 and qualified for National Preps after going 4-1 on the weekend. Baron received a first-round bye, but followed that up with a win by fall over Sam Calandra-Jayne (Abington Friends School). Matthew O`Neill (Malvern Prep) won by decision (5-0) over Baron in the Semifinal Round, but the sophomore battled back. In 4th Wrestlebacks, Baron won by fall over Zachary Moua (Haverford School) before taking out Ryan Tookes (Westtown School) by fall in the 3rd Place Match. 

Shai Sabag '27 - 120

Sabag finished the weekend with a 3-2 record, a 4th-place finish, and a spot at National Preps. The freshman received a bye in the first round before winning by decision over Carter Mangan (William Penn Charter School), 6-0. Sabag lost by tech fall (15-0) to Nathan Desmond (Wyoming Seminary), but bounced back against Theo Molot (Germantown Friends School), winning by tech fall, 15-0. Sabag fell to Calvin Werden (Western Reserve Academy) in the 3rd place match by decision, 8-7.

Adam Seidman '27 - 126

Seidman got to work early, taking down Khalil Jimenez (Abington Friends School) by fall in the first round before losing to Jason Torres (Malvern Prep) by major decision, 14-3, in the quarterfinals. However, Seidman fought back and won by tech fall over John Sharples (Westtown School) in the 2nd Wrestleback. The freshman fell to Wynn Pooler (Hill School) in the 3rd Wrestleback, but won by fall over Jimenez in the 7th Place Match. 

Robert Leeds '25 - 132

Leeds finished the weekend 4-1 overall with a third-place finish. He also qualified for National Preps. Leeds took his first two bouts by fall, taking down Nate Gearhart-Robboy (Germantown Friends School) and Myles Griffin (Abington Friends School), respectively. Mathew Botello (Wyoming Seminary) won by tech fall over Leeds in the Semifinal, but the junior captain won his wrestleback against Fernando Loor (Episcopal Academy) before defeating Matthew Hoban (Haverford School) by fall in the 3rd Place Match.

Aidan Lee '27 - 138

Lee finished the weekend 0-2. He lost by fall to Shane Reilly (Malvern Prep) and Zane Miller-Swatski (Episcopal Academy).

Jack Breme '26 - 150

Breme went 3-3 on the weekend with a 6th place finish while qualifying for National Preps. Breme dropepd his first bout against Anthony Evanitsky (Wyoming Seminary) by fall, but won by fall over Tristan Ferraro (Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) in the 1st Wrestleback. He won by decision, 5-1, over Felix Cardoso (Westtown School) in the second, and by fall over Spencer Schuh (Episcopal Academy) in the third wrestleback. However, Breme fell to Andrew Lyon (Haverford School) in the 4th Wrestleback before dropping the 5th Place Match to Conlan Boyer (Hill School) by decision, 8-1.

Luke Sugalski '25 - 165

Sugalski finished the tournament with a 4-1 record, a third-place finish, and a spot at National Preps. The junior captain won his first two bouts over Quincy Willis (Abington Friends School) and Gabe Danisi (Haverford School) by fall, but lost to Jack Chamberlain (Malvern Prep) by decision, 3-0, in the Semifinals. Sugalski won by fall over Leo Pritchett (Penn Charter) in his wrestleback before pinning Gavin Boyd (Mercersburg Academy) in the 3rd Place Match.
